Getting the Most out of Your Counseling Sessions
1.) Come with a teachable spirit.
2.) Be kind and patient with yourself and the counseling process.
3.) Bring something on which you can take notes.
4.) Give some thought to what you would like to cover with your therapist during your session and write it down.
5.) If you were given homework, be ready to talk about what you learned throughout the week.
Some things to consider are: What was effective, what was not, and be ready to identify if there is anything you can do differently next time to get you closer to your overall goals for change.
Take time to celebrate your wins and identify your on-going areas of growth. Remember, even if does not feel like it, you are making progress!
6.) Identify next steps you can take to activate your overall goals for change.
7.) Don’t give up!
Keep seeking God through prayer and His word, while meeting regularly with your local body of believers, and seeking sound counsel.
Take heart in what James 1:5 tells us: “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” The Lord’s plans for His children are to give them a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). The Lord is working all things together for His glory and your good (Romans 8:28).
Changing long-term habits can be very difficult. You can accomplish your overall goals for change with sustained work, identifying and following a consistent plan-of-action, and perseverance, all of which you have already demonstrated that you have.
After you schedule the counseling session, come ready to role up your sleeves, and dig in. It is hard, and can be scary, but you’re ready to change and you’re going to do great! You may even find yourself having a little bit of fun during the process.
